Since the early days of cinema, it has been acknowledged that film has a tight grip on the minds of the viewer, yet only recently have we been able to record viewers´ brain states while watching a film. Hosted by the Deutsche Guggenheim CLUB, the Berlin School of Mind and Brain (Humboldt Universitaet) and the Association of Neuroesthetics, Professor Uri Hasson (Neuroscience Institute, Princeton University) and Amos Gitai (director) will talk about the interrelations between film-art and neuroscience.
In cooperation with art forum berlin and within the frame of the Collector´s Talks, Anupam Poddar, Director, Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi and Sandhini Poddar, Assistant Curator of Asian Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York will discuss the theme of fi lm and video art from India, Pakistan, Iran and Central Asia.

In Wangechi Mutu's art, collage attains to its full potential as an aesthetic and political means that weaves together numerous cultural threads. In 1907 the art historian Wilhelm Worringer wrote his seminal dissertation Abstraktion und Einfühlung [Abstraction and Empathy] that has often been interpreted as the theoretical foundation par excellence of Expressionism and abstraction. In his lecture, Prof. Dr. Böhringer of the Institute of Art Studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig undertakes a reappraisal.

The internationally renowned architecture office GRAFT, known for its extraordinary approaches and organizational forms, outlines Frank Lloyd Wright and his importance to today´s architecture. Afterwards, the documentary film Art, Architecture, and Innovation – Celebrating the Guggenheim Museum will be screened, which was shot on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Wright´s legendary museum building.

Imi Knoebel´s project Zu Hilfe, zu Hilfe - for the Neue Nationalgalerie initiates a dialogue with Mies van der Rohe, perhaps the greatest purist among modern architects. Engaging the dominant space with radical austerity, Knoebel offers a unique experience of both artists´ intentions.
Eugen Blume, Director of the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart Berlin and curator of the exhibition Zu Hilfe, zu Hilfe..., outlines the history of this artistic exchange and its remarkable outcome.

Drawing, light projection, photography, video, object, installation, painting - these and other media interact in Imi Knoebel´s work with stimulating reciprocity. Martin Schulz, private lecturer at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, charts the complex process relationships in Knoebel´s existing oeuvre and the close intermedial and temporal connections in the artist´s diverse lines of work.

"Lustserien", a term coined by Klaus Theweleit, describes the affective appropriation of "cool" media-promoted series of popular brand products. Coinciding with Pop Art, the minimalistic tendencies of the 1960s were already a reaction to these "Lustserien". Initially, Imi Knoebel limited himself to the black and white of his "Line Paintings" and to the brown of the masonite in his famous installation Raum 19. Despite their apparent asceticism, his earliest works are "Lustserien" for two reasons. Jörg Heiser, author and co-editor of the English art magazine frieze, explores these reasons, as well as the question why color is only one aspect of seriality in Knoebel´s practice.

For the last ten years Will Cotton´s work has explored themes of overindulgence and insatiability. Drawing and painting from confectionary landscapes he builds in the studio, his work often depicts an imagined utopia and it´s inhabitants. A New York native, Will Cotton exhibits internationally.
Hannes von Gösseln, director of the Galerie de Gestlo, Hamburg, and at the time European agent for many artists included in Picturing America, gives a first-hand account of the emergence of Photorealism and its ascent in the international art scene.

In 1969, Wolfgang Becker was invited to Aachen to facilitate the founding of the Neue Galerie - Ludwig Collection. Together with Peter Ludwig, the chocolate manufacturer and art collector from Aachen, who had just loaned his Pop Art collection to the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne, Becker prepared an exhibition of "Pop and Post-Pop" - the newest trend from New York: Photorealism. The lecture explores the origins of the movement and probes the question, how photorealistic paintings reflect new modes of perception.

David Lubin is Professor of Art at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. He has written several books on U.S. painting and popular culture. His current research investigates the role of American art during wartime. Lubin's lecture considers Photorealism in terms of the social and political upheavals of the 70s.
