Neo Rauch: "HIRT", 2001

"He is going to jump at you from the canvas a couple of times yet", announced Neo Rauch in a telephone call during the preparation of his exhibition at Deutsche Guggenheim. The first sketch for his "Mutant" ended up in a Swiss collection after having been exhibited in New York. It was only as he was drawing the sketches for his next work, "HIRT", that Rauch had the idea to use a different medium to present his figure. Thus, in co-operation with the Lichttechnisches Werk in Leipzig, Rauch developed the lamp in the shape of a sheep-dog pointing the way - an object whose full quality can only be appreciated in the dark. Painted versions of the "HIRT" can also be discovered in Rauch's new paintings for Deutsche Guggenheim.

Digital print on acrylic glass, aluminium base, illuminant enclosed.
