Edition No. 05
Hallesche Kunst-Kanne, 1998
In honor of the exhibition "After Mountains and Sea: Frankenthaler 1956-1959", the Deutsche Guggenheim offers a Kunstkanne or "art coffee-pot" for its fifth special edition. With its gestural lines and drips and splashes of color, this unusual coffeepot makes playful reference to the work of the Abstract Expressionists and Helen Frankenthaler's practice of pouring thinned paints directly onto her canvases from tin coffee cans. The shape of this more formal ceramic piece is based on a 1950s design by Marguerite Friedländer, who in the 1930s was head of the porcelain workshop at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Applied Arts in Halle.
