Edition No. 49

Julie Mehretu: untitled (Grey Area), 2009

For the edition to accompany her exhibition, Julie Mehretu has produced a drypoint etching that incorporates concerns explored in her cycle of paintings. While the American artist was working on her commissioned work for the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, she produced two distinct printing plates for an artistsí portfolio in support of the Obama Victory Fund. No less than thirteen artists participated in this project, including such illustrious names as Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Serra, and John Baldessari. Only one plate was used, however, and Julie Mehretu dedicated the second one to the Deutsche Guggenheim as Edition No.49.
The simultaneity of her commissioned work in Berlin and the edition is striking. In her semi-abstract works, Julie Mehretu deals with the experience of urbanity as a space of effacement and decay, but also of transformation and transition.
