Edition No. 36

Study for a Wolf’s Bodily Movement: For Head On, 2006

Cai Guo-Qiang’s edition directly references his installation Head On, which the Chinese-born artist created specially for Berlin.

The realistic ninety-nine wolves of the installation were preceded by small-format clay studies from which Cai Guo-Qiang selected a series of nine models for the edition.

As the sculptural equivalent of artist sketches, the nine models emphasize the basic structure of a wolf’s bodily movements, more so than the actual life-sized replicas. Stripped of all but the most fundamental physical features, the twists and turns of the bare resin models reveal the drastic nature of a wolf’s movement in all its genuine expression.

The edition is limited to eleven casts of each of the nine models, corresponding to the ninety-nine wolves in the installation Head On.

Replica made of dark gray resin. Packaged in a wooden box with gold silkscreen print.
Limited edition of 11x9 pieces (18 A.P.), numbered and signed by the artist.
