Edition No. 29
Jacob’s Ladder: Love (Yellow, Red, Blue and Black and White); War (Orange, Violet, Green and Black and White), 2004
Jacob dreamt about angels that were moving up and down a ladder between earth and heaven. The invention of the toy with the same name is even older than the dream and has roots going all the way back to ancient China.
John Baldessari’s limited edition presents, on one side six film stills of kissing couples, and on the other side six pistol duels from American B-movies. As soon as the motor of Jacob’s Ladder is set in motion, “War” and “Love” appear to meander and intermingle.
Just as in his commissioned work Somewhere Between Almost Right and Not Quite (With Orange) for the Deutsche Guggenheim, it is a matter of that disquieting moment between extremes which in John Baldessari’s kinetic object returns again and again as if in an endless loop.
