In 2012, Ondák will play an important role in Deutsche Bank’s art program. Chosen by the Deutsche Bank Global Art Advisory Council, which is comprised of the renowned curators Okwui Enwezor, Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann, and Nancy Spector, he has been selected as “Artist of the Year” 2012. Following Wangechi Mutu in 2010 and Yto Barrada in 2011, with Roman Ondák the council chose an artist whose work emphasizes the draft character and conceptual approach of this medium. “It will be exciting to see how he will challenge the medium of drawing and the material of paper in the future,” says Udo Kittelmann, Director of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, who nominated Ondák for the award.

For his exhibition as part of Deutsche Guggenheim’s commission program, Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco will create related sculptural and photographic installations from detritus he has gathered at two sites – a playing field in New York where he has collected discarded evidence of activities held there, and a protected coastal biosphere and wildlife reserve in Mexico that is also the repository for flows of industrial and commercial waste from the Pacific Ocean. The exhibition will invoke several of the artist’s recurring motifs, including the traces of erosion, poetic encounters with mundane materials, and the ever present tension between nature and culture. It will also underscore and amplify Orozco’s subtle practice of subjecting each of his projects to personal, idiosyncratic systems.

In a time in which social reponsibility continues to be in the focus of public attention Deutsche Bank's Social Reponsibility report demonstrates what passion to perform can achieve when it is passed on and provides ample evidence of how we contribute to building social capital in the communities in which we operate around the globe – for the benefit of society and ourselves.
